Dear Managers,

Very many thanks to all who responded, who were:

Dirk Grunwald <grunwald_at_cons.cs.colorado.edu>
William Todd Featherston <wtfxston_at_netcom.com>
Norman Wilson <norman_at_hprc.utoronto.ca>
Dr. Tom Blinn <tpb_at_zk3.dec.com>

The consensus was that, with a couple of exceptions, the clone companies are
simply repackaging a DEC board, the EB164, and adding their own choice of
drives, graphics adapter etc. One company (Aspen Systems, Wheat Ridge CO -
www.aspsys.com) manufacturers a board with additional PCI slots. A couple of
respondents also singled out Aspen for high quality of manufacture. One
respondent had nothing but praise for a system from Nekotech
(www.alphapower.com). It was also pointed out that DEC has not certified any
of these systems for running DU.

Among the problems mentioned were a clone from Just Imagine Systems which
ran into problems running DU, which were eventually traced to the
graphics adapter. Another system from Aspen Systems had trouble running
two SCSI adapters simultaneously. There was the impression that several of
the clone companies had limited UNIX experience, as one might expect.
