Over in comp.unix.osf.osf1 (and to a lesser degree, in comp.sys.dec)
there have been several postings on the topic of happy coexistence
(or, more accurately, the lack of same!) between DUnix and printers
equipped with an HP JetDirect card. I haven't noticed much (if any)
discussion about it on the alpha-osf-managers list, but thought I'd
pass along the following comments and queries ...
HP makes their JetAdmin software available via anonymous FTP (it can
currently be found on hpcc999.external.hp.com), but for DUnix users,
there's one big problem: They currently support only HP/UX and Sun
systems (both SunOS 4 and Solaris 2).
Since the package includes a dozen or so executable programs, and a
similar number of shared libraries, this does present a difficulty.
But ... Has it occurred to anybody that maybe the FreePort Express
translator might provide the capability to port the SunOS version of
HP's software to DUnix? Has anyone actually tried this? If so, did
it work? Fail miserably?
If nobody has tried this approach, I might do it myself. But I'd
prefer to not to bother if I could find out in advance that I'd be
wasting my time; and, if someone has already succeeded in getting
the software up under DUnix by using FreePort Express, it would be
nice to know that, too (including what minor tweaks, if any, were
necessary).
