SUMMARY: Archive Viper QIC-150 DU 3.2C
We knew that the QIC-150 has been used with OSF/1 2.1.So I reinstalled
OSF/1 2.1 and the tapedrive showed I/O error using tar or mt -f stat
command.Second drive showed the same problem. For my tests I used two
scratchtapes which had been erased with a strong magnetic field.
For verifying the two scratchtapes I wrote with tar files at a SPARC10
with SUNos 4.1.3 and it worked fine without any problems.
Now I moved the tapes to the ALPHA and everything worked fine.
solution: When you boot Digital Unix and you insert brandnew
or erased tapes (with magnetic field) into a QIC-150
tapedrive, you will get I/O error.
Insert a good tape with files on it and do the following
command "mt -f /dev/nrmt0m stat".
Now your new tapes will work fine.
2. Problem: When you write to a QIC-150 tapedrive with the wrong
density "tar cvf /dev/nrmt0a . " you will get I/O error
and your drive will not write when you then give the
correct density "tar cvf /dev/nrmt0m . "
Powering the tapedrive down and up helps.
Thanks to Dr. Thomas P. Blinn from the DEC UNIX Software Group for
his fast response. He gave me statement that the upgrades should not
be the problem, that the QIC-150 tapedrive wouldn't work anymore.
