I hope no one is going through our current situation, but here's a quick
rundown ...
I posted a note two weeks ago about zero'ng the counters on the ethernet
interface (and haven't posted the responses or the program that was sent
me - will be doing so in my next message). Later that same evening, the
counters were zero'd out and I sent a note to my co-workers that we did
not need to reboot our two Alphas. They came in the next morning and
checked the kernel's ethernet counters(?) (which hadn't been zero'd) and
rebooted the systems thinking I was crazy. (I am at times :^)
Unfortunately, a RZ74 in a StorageWorks box never came back online. We
have had a couple of our service guys in to fix it - with results that
range from 'no improvement' to 'repeatedly jamming a broken StorageWorks
case into the pedestal and bending 3 or 4 of the SCSI *slots* into wire
spaghetti' ... but, two weeks later, we're still down a drive.
Our current situation is one running RZ74 (SCSI ID 0) and three drives
outside the tower in & out of their cases. The dip switches on the case
don't appear to help as the ribbon cable that connects internally is not
always in the same position:
RZ74 backplane
[Power] :.::::::::: [ ---- SCSI Connector ---- ]
(the colons & period combo is for the jumpers/ribbon cable connection.)
The ribbon cable only covers 6 pairs at a time and we have different
combinations across the drives that our service people have brought - so
it appears we can't (or don't know how to) select automatic SCSI address
selection. Every time we've popped two drives into the tower, they both
use SCSI ID 0 and we have to remove the second one.
Does anyone either (a) know the proper position for the ribbon cable in
a StorageWorks case for a RZ74, or (b) know the proper jumper settings
to force a RZ74 to some other SCSI ID (in which case we would simply not
connect that ribbon cable at all). I've had success with the latter and
a 720mb drive from IBM in the past, but I can't find the jumper settings
for a RZ74 anywhere.
