SUMMARY:

First of thanks to all those that responded, listed below, the overall consenus
was to install
CDE (Common Desktop Environment) ADK (Advanced Developers Kit) from DEC. Also a
number of other tools were suggested such as xfm, xdir, unix cockpit etc. I
plan to take
a look at them so once again thanks for all the responses. I hope I can return
the favour
some day.

     See ya,

Craig,
You can install the CDE ADK, but I'd wait until 4.0. This includes
a file manager, and a bunch of other desktop tools.

One of the CDE applications is a file manager, but you'll probably
have to make the full dive into the CDE stuff and in V3.2D it is
an advanced development feature.

Well, I've installed xfm on a couple of Linux machines around here (though
not used it much, I'm lost without a shell prompt:) and its reputed to
work under several other OS's as well, OSF/1 among them. I imagine a tiny
bit of fiddling might be required, though it does use imake. I've a copy
at

ftp://ftp.hhmi.swmed.edu/pub/linux/source/X11/xfm-1.3.2-tar.gz

if you're interested.

Cheers,
K.

There's one included with CDE. You could also try to get LLNL XDIR
http://www.llnl.gov/ia/xdir.html. Other people will suggest xfm to you or unix
cockpit.

I understand that CDE (to be included on DU 4.0) has a file manager
since it is modeled after Microsoft Windows.
There is a version of CDE which can be installed as a layered product on
DU 3.x .
There is also the old Ultrix file manager DXVUE (I think)
which has been ported to DU 3.x
by TriTeal Corporation. Our local DEC office sent us a copy out of the blue
but I never installed it and can't find it, so I probably threw it out
in a sudden attack of "clean up or die in the pending gravitational collapse".

clients of CDE. An ADk version has been distributed
 with DU since 3.2 release.
You may want to give it a try.

Install CDE (from the OS cd). It is not the same as the WINshit, but very
intuitive, in fact so intuitive that even a PC user should be able to cope.

I choose to install xfm. To build the software, the xpm library is necessary.
Xfm gives a file manager and a application manager. The customization is
graphical and easy.
The name of the used packages are: libXpm-4.7.tar.gz and xfm-1.3.tar.gz.
I find the xfm tar file on ftp.inria.fr in /X/contrib-R5/applications directory.
I find the libXpm-4.7.tar.gz on ftp.ibp.fr in /pub/X11/contrib/libraries
directory.
Good luck,

Check out the CDE stuff. I don't care for it.... but some users
love it. Also checkout ftp.x.org - if you care to build it theres
lots of free stuff avail.

I use xdir. Its pretty good once you get the hang of it and it
works on just about and platform. We have SGI, SUN and DEC
versions.
Information form the program
--------------------------------------------------------
LLNL XDIR provides a graphical user interface for file transfer
and for direct manipulation of local and remote directories on
UNIX (and a number of non-UNIX) platforms. LLNL XDIR offers the
ability to view directory information in four different formats,
ranging from long lists to tree structures. LLNL XDIR is based on
UNIX, the C programming language, OSF/Motif and FTP; hence, LLNL
XDIR is highly portable.
LLNL XDIR was written by Neale Smith, a member of the Livermore

You can install CDE off of the base cd. Or get a copy of Xdir from
phoenix.ocf.llnl.gov in the llnlxftp directory it is a great little program.

Xfm or Xfilemanager , these can be found on gatekeeper.dec.com or use
