Dear Colleagues,

I am having some problems with getting my Alpha machine to talk to my modem.
I don't even get an echo not to mention a login prompt on a dumb terminal
connected to serial port 1. I am yet to try the second serial port.

Now, this is what I have done so far.

1. I have established that the modem works when connected to a PC. (DTR
light comes on)

2. My telephone line (to the Alpha) works, 'cos modem rings but doesn't
answer. (DTR light doesn't show)

3. I put in an entry in /etc/inittab as follows.. .. and ran init q
         tty00:34:respawn:/usr/sbin/getty /dev/tty00 9600 vt100

4. there is an entry for 9600# in my /etc/gettydefs.

5. I have redirected outputs from Unix commands to /dev/tty00 with no success.

I have a suspicion that I don't have the right RS232 cable for the job. Any
ideas what the cable configuration should be? And is there anyhing else I am
missing? Please share your experiences with me. And yes I am RTFM! *grin*

Thanks for all the anticipated help.
