Hi,
Last week I posted the printing problem that we have using HP JetDirect
(the problem description is attached below). I got some replies, mostly
suggested that I check the network connection and configuration, which I
have done and I can ping the external JetDirect printers and all of them
respond ok. Another suggestion is from Shiu.Tin_at_anu.edu.au, who gave the
following comment :-

<>I had a similar problem when I try to connect our HP LaserJet 5M printer
<>(this time only using the printer port). What I did was removing the
<>
<>:rw:\
<>
<>line from the printcap file and everything works fine. (Looks as if
<>the printer does not support bi-directional control). I would be
<>interested to hear of any other comment or fixes.
<>
<>Regards,
<>Shiu

I tried removing the :rw:\ line from the printcap file, but still trying to
print from network and not the printer port as Shiu tried, but still it does
not work.

Any other suggestion in helping to solve this problem will be very much
appreciated.

Below is the original problem description :-

*Hi,
*
*In our environment we have a DEC AlphaServer 2000 4/233 and most of our
printers are HP LaserJet and HP line printer. The *problem we have is we
configured two HP LaserJet 4MV connected to the network thru internal
JetDirect cards, model J2552A, and *they all print okay. Below is the
printcap entry for one of the printers :-
*
*>>ishp4mv|lp0|ishp4mv:\
*>> :af=/usr/adm/ishp4mv.acct:\
*>> :fc#0177777:\
*>> :fs#023:\
*>> :if=/usr/lbin/ps_level2of:\
*>> :lf=/usr/adm/ishp4mv.elog:\
*>> :lp=:\
*>> :mx#0:\
*>> :of=/usr/lbin/ps_level2of:\
*>> :pl#66:\
*>> :pw#80:\
*>> :rm=ishp4mv:\
*>> :rp=text:\
*>> :rw:\
*>> :sd=/usr/spool/ishp4mv:\
*>> :sh:\
*>> :xf=/usr/lbin/xf:
*
*And the lpq command returns the following output :-
*>> omc_pg4:Thu May 23 14:29:37 1996 :
*>> JetDirect lpd: no entries
*
*Now the problem is when we configured another two HP printers (one is a HP
LaserJet 4M and the other is a HP 2562c line printer) *connected to the
network thru external JetDirect adapters, model J2382B, both are unable to
print. Below is the printcap entry for the *HP Line Printer :-
*
*>>mrpline|lp1|mrpline:\
*>> :af=/usr/adm/mrpline.acct:\
*>> :if=/usr/lbin/lpf:\
*>> :lf=/usr/adm/mrpline.elog:\
*>> :lp=:\
*>> :mx#0:\
*>> :of=/usr/lbin/lpf:\
*>> :pl#66:\
*>> :pw#80:\
*>> :rm=mrpline:\
*>> :rp=text:\
*>> :rw:\
*>> :sd=/usr/spool/mrpline:\
*>> :sh:\
*>> :xf=/usr/lbin/xf:
*
*And the lpq command returns the following output :-
*>> omc_pg4:Mon May 27 08:40:12 1996 : waiting for mrpline to come up
*
*Both these printers are also configured to print from our HP9000 and our
Novell machines and they print okay. From what we can *see is that the
internal JetDirect cards seem to work fine, but the external adapters seems
to have problem communicating with the *server (this is shown thru the lpq
command). Our local technical support for both DEC and HP have not been much
help in solving *this problem. So any help in solving this problem will be
much appreciated.
*
*Thank you.
