SGI tar tapes?

Hello once again,

I have a DAT tar tape created on an SGI system. When we try to read it on a
DEC 3000 with TLZ04, we get that "This doesn't look like a tar file"
message.

Things we've tried:
        dd if=/dev/rmt0h conv=swab | tar -xvf -
        dd if=/dev/rmt0h ibs=<pick a number conv=swab | tar -svf -

Are we missing something? Like the correct input/output block sizes?
