We have recently changed over to the following configuration for our
network which consists of SUNs, DECs and SGI machines.
We run NFS as well as NIS and the configuration of the servers and
clients is -
1) Alphaserver 1000, Digital Unix 3.2D NFS server, NIS master
2) SPARCstation LX, SUNOS 4.1.3 Mail & Internet gateway, Name Server,
NIS slave
3) SPARCstations, SUNOS 4.1.? clients
4) SPARCstations, Solaris 2.[3-5] clients
5) Alphastations, Digital Unix clients
6) ...
I find that for the machines at (3) I am not able to query the DNS/BIND
for resolving hostnames outside our NIS domain. As a result, a command
like "ftp xxx.lanl.gov" immediately comes out with the message "unknown
host".
Here is some history. Earlier a SPARCstation 2 with SUNOS 4.1 was the NIS
master and the NIS was configured to run with DNS ( -b option for makedbm
of the NIS hosts databases was given). So that the individual machines
actually stopped at NIS lookup. After the migration to the Alphaserver
for NIS I find that there is no such option with its NIS and that the
task has to be done individually on the machines. I have been able to
configure each of the machines under 1), 3) and 5) individually to
consult dns/bind for hostname lookups however, I am unable to set up the
m/c s at 3). They are 18 in number!!
I have later tried to make m/c at 2) serve the hosts map on the NIS
domain and while making the hosts map on it, I gave the required -b
option with makedbm. As a result, whenever a SUNOS m/c uses 2) as its
NIS server all is well and the "unknown host" messages disappear but as
soon as m/c 1) is its NIS server the "unknown host" starts popping back.
Is there any solution to this problem except moving the NIS server
function to a SUNOS 4.1.x machine??
Any suggestions may please be mailed DIRECTLY TO amk_at_iucaa.ernet.in
I will summarize to the group. Thanks in advance.
