I had asked about others using Jaz drives, disk formats for Jaz drives
and problems with errors in the drive.
We had numerous disks with media errors that caused various problems
with the drive. The drive would lock up & require a system reboot to
clear.
I received several requests for further information but no assistance.
We have not resolved the problem, but have found a work-around.
Rather than format with the DEC SCU utilities, we hooked up the drive
to a W95 system and used the Iomega JazTools. Following this, we
didn't have the problems we had seen before.
So far, the drive is working well, is quiet, and is very speedy --
about 2/3 the speed of an RZ28 when hooked to a 2100-4/275. I used
the following /etc/disktab entry...
jaz|IOMEGA Jaz 1GB drive:\
:ty=winchester:dt=SCSI:ns#130:nt#5:nc#3217:\
:oc#0:pc#2091050:bc#8192:fc#1024:
and this gives a 1.01GB file system with no lost sectors and a reasonable
(but small) number of superblocks:
Filesystem 1024-blocks Used Avail Capacity Mounted on
/dev/rz10c 1011569 656094 254318 72% /jaz
We've also been able to build a complet Solaris system on a Jaz drive
and use it to boot a PC. In the past, I've used a Zip drive to boot a
minimal Alpha system, so I'm not expecting problems on using the Jaz
for that either.
