Thanks to all that responded. In general, adding a third-party hard disk
is straight foward and reliable to work. Many people had success
installing Seagate drives into their systems.
Also, many responded with vendors that they have had success with in the
past. I have not got in touch with all of them yet, but one that I did get
a hold of was a company called Western Scientific (1-800-905-6699). The
sales rep there was very helpful and knowledgable. In fact they test,
format, integrate and provide all necessary mounting hardware for their
drives specifically for the machine and operating system you are running,
so there is less risk involved with getting disks thru them. Also, they
have a toll free technical support line that u can call anytime. They
quoted my a price for a Quantum 4.3 GB drive that was $1300 less than what
Digital was selling.
As was previously posted he told me Digital tweaks their drives slightly
for optimization purposes, but I have my doubts whether the optimization is
worth the price difference.
Again, thanks to all for the fast replies.
