SUMMARY: Seagate Hawk more like a dodo

Hi all, This was a long time coming, but so was finding the answer..

The original Question stated dificulties in using a Seagate Hawk 2Gb SCSI
Drive on primarily an Alpha AXP 150. The drive would show up in showdev,
but if you tried to install DUnix you would get CAM_LOGGER SCSI errors.

As it turns out Seagate were the only help... Digital informed me
(via hardware technicians and readers of this group) that it was not a
supported drive, even though they use Seagate drives.

Digital use custom firmware (whats new) and therefore the drive needs to
be specially treated before it will work with Digital equipment. Ok, so
it worked fine with Suns, MSdos and even Linux but not Digital because of
the need for this treatment.

OK. However since Digital do not support the drive, they will not help in
treating it (that just good business sense, I guess). So Seagate got hold
of some firmware from overseas and are going to treat the drive for me..
(Ya if it works).

The only thing that needs to be mentioned is that, here in Australia a
2Gb Digital SCSI drive is (at our last quote) $1300. The Seagate drives
we have been using we got for $300 and they have been reliable. So
Digital need to take a good look at some client institutions, in our case
universities who simply are forced to buy non-digital products due to the
cost and in trying to get them to work, frown on Digital....

And in response to one comment (remain nameless), I don't need a reality
check, I know whats going on probably more than you do. People in the
real world sometimes go with 2nd and 3rd party gear simply because we
have no choice...

I say lets keep up the tradition that I have found so far to be true:

"If its UNIX it compatible, give it a go!!"

over and out!

Steve..
