Hello everyone,
Well I got more replies that time than in the original problem.
I have to clear a few details up that I have neglected to mention (or did
not consider) hopefully this will leave everyone happy and everyone the
wiser.
1) All drive manufacturers use firmware on their drives.
2) Digitals is so the OS can identify the drive, so you can wack it in
and go.
3) Although Digital were not much help, that was not from lack of
trying, I spoke to software guys and our local DEC Tech spent an
hour on it.. they did what they could.
4) Alot of third party gear does work on DEC machines just fine.
5) Barracuda's (according to Seagate) have more management features
on them and therefore have a better chance on working, they
cost a bit more and needless to say there is a shortage of those
here.
6) Upon reading resent messages from apparent sarcastic people, I
have to come to agree with them. No harm done..
7) Thanks again for all the help again for the new postings
Even still it seems that in this case I happen to be handed a
configuration that was doomed from day one. So thanks to Digital and all
concerned. I'll have to leave this one in Seagate's hands.
Steve..
