Hi managers,
We recently upgraded from DUnix 3.2d to DUnix 4.0 on one of our machines.
Since then we've been having a bit of a problem with a couple of hundred
uninterruptable sleeping processes (state U in ps). These are all being
produced by the same program, a hacked ntalkd which detects flash bombs
(flash bombs use the talk daemon to send control characters to a user).
from ps auxw...
root 10018 0.0 0.0 1.59M 8K ?? U Jul 28 0:00.00
ntalkd
I'm not sure that the upgrade caused this problem as I only installed the
ntalkd a week or so before the upgrade while the students were away, so
there wasn't the huge use of talk that is happening now.
The talk daemon works, it just doesn't seem to die and gets stuck in the
uninterruptable sleeping state. Is it possible to get rid of these
processes, short of a reboot? We've tried every variation of kill
available, without luck.
And why would these processes get into this state in the first place?
Any advice or pointers would be most appreciated.
Regards,
Andrew
