SUM: cpio compatibility

In general, they suggest to use another backup tool, such as tar or GNU
cpio. What we need is to recover old files from tapes, and those files
has already been erased from disk (so, we can't use another backup tool
now). We didn't use ATT tar because it is not multivolume. I'll try
anyway compiling GNU cpio on Alpha, and try to use its switches to see
what happens, and, in the meantime, will try to ask DEC.
