Firmware upgrades and DEFTA problem

Hi Folks,

I need to get some info from the DEC-wise folks here.

First question:

I got my DU 4.0 package a few weeks ago, and looking through the install
instructions for the new firmware CD. It states that for one of my
workstations, a 250 4/266, I need at least firmware level 6.0 to use DU
4.0. However, the contents list does not have anything for this model
workstation. The closest is a model 255 X/XXX. Can I use the firmware
for the model 255 in my 250, or is there another firmware CD that I'll
need to get?

Second question:

On a very old system, 3000/500 AXP, OSF/1 v1.3a, Firmware 5.1, PAL V1.35,
I have a DEFTA-FA FDDI interface with v1.0 firmware. That combo has
been giving out messages of "Ring Initialized" mixed with "Link
Unavailable" and "Link Available" ever since the day I installed it. It
did this whether it was connected to a DEC 900 MX concentrator or a
Cisco concentrator. When it does this, the log-ins through this link
does not seem to be obviously affected, but file transfers become real
slow. There must be some problem causing this, so is there a patch or
firmware upgrade that I can apply to fix it? I can NOT move to a new
version of the operating system, but I do have the complete patch kit
for OSF/1 v1.3. I need to figure out how to install it. But I think
the problem is more with the DEFTA board than the host. Any comments?

thanks in advance for any help on this.
