Backup scripts...?

Hello managers

Alpha 1000
D-UNIX 3.2

I am trying to implement some CRON controlled backup scripts to run during
the night. We have 5 disks (mostly one file system per disk except root &
usr are on one disk!) so one night we back up disks 1-3 the next 4&5 and so on.

Now, does anyone have a skeleton backup script that I can modify? Also -
can I use the 'dump' command or do I need 'vdump' - I'm not sure of the
difference between the two - except that vdump is for advanced file systems
but can also handle ufs! - we have ufs filesystems.

If I use dump do I need to take the system down to single user mode during
the script and then back up to multi-user mode again - and how would I do
this? I understand that with 'vdump' I don't need to go down to single-user
mode-why? and is it safe to backup system files that are in use - i.e. does
it make a RELIABLE backup of root and usr?

Any help/comments much appreciated

Paul
