Hi,
I work with an Alpha 3000/600 which still runs OSF/1 v 1.3. Since I hope that
some of my problems might vanish and as I think that being more up to date
has some advantages ;) I have ordered binaries etc. to install / upgrade
to versions 3.2 resp. 4.0.
I have read quite a lot of things in this mailing list, but I do not feal
too sure about what is waiting for me (especially since I never had to do
anything like updating/installing a UNIX-system up to now), so I would
appreciate any general comments, hints, ideas concerning this task.
And I have a few questions at the moment (I bet there will be a lot more
later on):
- Is there any webpage that I should read as well? (Have tried the obvious
ones, but ... )
- I know I will have to update the firmware. Since most of the documentation
I have for my actual system has been lost, I don't know what my actual FW
version is. How can I find it out??
- Since I don't have the binaries for v 2.x will I better install 3.2 than try
to find a way to update ... ? And afterwards go on to 4.0 ?
- How long will it take me to go all the way to version 4.0?
- Does anybody have any experiences concerning xview applications
(compatibility, stbility etc.)
- What about gnu software (especially the c compiler) ??
Well, thats rather a lot for the start. Thank you very much,
Annette
