We have currently three DECstations with Ultrix, which are going to be
REPLACED with three Alphas with Digital Unix. Our current configuration
is as follows :
- one of the DECs has a couple of data and software disks attached
to it, as well as some tape and CD drives.
- the other two DECs are "personal" ones, they NFS mount the above
disks, which contain some common software. They also have soft links
to the "big" one for things like man pages etc.
- the "big" one is also acting as name server and mx for all the rest
of our machines (mainly Suns)
- the machines have three names (say A, B and C in ifctr.mi.cnr.it) and
IP numbers (say 155.253.2.x y and z)
We would like to make a gradual transition (say one week) as follows :
- switch on the three "naked" Alphas
(at this stage we should assign to them names and numbers, see Q1 below)
- attach to them the new peripherals (disks) delivered with them
(see Q2 below)
- configure them with the same kind of NFS mounts of the previous DECs
(at this stage or later)
- migrate and customize any local shell script from the DECs to the Alphas
- reinstall all necessary software on the Alphas
- test it
(up to here the DECs remain on, at least 2 of them)
- move the nameserver either to an Alpha or elsewhere to a Sun
- switch the DECs off
- attach the disks and tapes formerly on the DECs to the Alphas (again
see Q2)
(at this point we should have attained the final configuration)
Our questions are :
Q1: we would like that in the final configurations the 3 Alphas have the
same name and IP numbers of the current DECs. Of course during the
transition this would not be possible since the DECs remain on.
We would like to know what is the best way to do this :
- assign to the Alphas the final names, with provisional IP numbers,
and reset the IP numbers once the DECs are off
- or assign them (also) provisional names and change them later (and
may be assign to them, one at a time, the final IP number and
replace the DECs one by one)
In particular what are the full steps for changing a machine IP number
or name ? Possibly avoiding things like kernel reconfiguration.
(we know how to this for Suns, we have "re-christened" upgraded Suns
quite often, and once also we did this for the DECs when we moved from
1 machine to 3 machines)
Q2: Concerning addition of peripherals, is it true that, contrary to the
DECs, one has to reconfigure the kernel each time a new SCSI device is
added ?
We would appreciate any advice, particularly from persons sharing similar
experience and history (i.e. previous Ultrix experience, no OSF experience).
