Dear Fellow Managers,
My humblest apologies. I forgot to include the original
question in the last summary about the DEC 3000 boot disk
problems. So here is the summary again and the question.
Thanks VERY much for your quick and helpful responses.
In particular I would like to thank Louis Bouchard:
(bouchard_l_at_decus.fr),
Ken Teh (teh_at_chinook.phy.anl.gov),
Hellebo Knut (knut.hellebo_at_nho.hydro.com) and
D. Bremner (bremner_at_cs.mcgill.ca).
Basically the solution was to boot from the install CD
and issue the command:
# disklabel -wr -t[ufs|advfs] <disk> <disktype> <primary-boot>
<secondary-boot>.
The primary-boot and secondary-boot placeholders are
files located in the /mdec directory. There is one for ufs and
for AdvFs.
I know. I really should have RTFM'd.
My original question was:
I have a DEC 3000 system with an RZ26 system disk running
Digital Unix 3.0b. On Friday I tried to reboot the system but
after the system gives the messages:
AUDIT BOOT STARTS
AUDIT CHECKSUM GOOD
Then it gives the message:
84 FAIL
I think I have zapped the boot blocks of the system disk
as I can boot off the install CD and mount and read both the /
and /usr filesystems of that disk. Is there some way to remake a
good boot block without having to reinstall the operating system?
This problem happened just after I made some changes to the
system and I did not get a chance to back up before this problem
happened. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
