This is an update to the summary I posted a two weeks ago. I had
indicated that I had not received any replies.

We were under the pressure to fix this problem, so we "downgraded" to
DU 3.2C. However, I am planning to upgrade one of our other alphas,
and I will try their suggestions.

My original problem was that when we upgraded to DU4.0, we could not run
latex from within emacs. It would just hang the system. Things we had
tried which did not work was to make sure latex works O.K. by itself
(which it did) and also recompiled, re-installed emacs and latex.
I did not receive a single reply from the list. I am not sure if this
is because nobody is running DU4.0/emacs/latex, or is it because
nobody has experienced this particular problem.
This week I realized that I could run Tex from within emacs as root.
So I checked the permissions on files, checked paths,etc. but all seemed
fine.
Next, I thought there might be a problem with emacs forking a latex
process, so I rebuilt the kernel with higher maxuser values,etc. but it
did not help.
Digital says they had not seen this problem before.
Still I am looking forward to receiving any suggestions that any of you
may have.

I didn't respond to you original query because my environment is a
little bit different and I didn't think that my data would be useful
to you. But since you have not received any feedback, I'll go ahead
and offer the little bit of data that I have. I'm running an emacs
19.31 under DU 4.0 that was built under 3.2c with the Dec C
compiler. My TeX is 3.1415. I normally use AucTex and this all works
fine. In order to give you a little more data, I turned off AucTex
and used plain "Latex" mode under emacs and executed a tex-file (C-c
C-f). This also works.

I have been using Latex from with emacs fine on DU4.0, but
I just did a little experiment, and it is because I
am using auc-tex mode. There seems to a problem with
the tex-mode that ships with emacs 19.28 and 19.30 on DU4.0
