A range of (well 3) ideas/actions.

1) when doing the /usr/sbin/doconfig add the line

semmsl 35

(35 or whatever number is appropiate) to the config file
Some of the responses with this suggestion also mentioned adding;

shmmax and shmseg as well. I did not bother with these as ingres was reporting
shared memory use OK when booting, but barfing on the semaphores bit.

2) modify /usr/incluse/sys/param.h and
3) use /etc/sysconfig to set sem-msl

(I did not know about the command sysconfig, just about to look at it).

The first two messages (olvind.jacobsen & Ian.Martin) suggested option
(1) (as did some of the other respondents, but I got to read the others
after redoing the kernel), which I've just completed, and
ingres has now booted successfully.

Thanks to all.
