Here was my original request:

Thanks to the folks who responded.  I ended up figuring the problem out
for myself after dogging DEC Support for 5 days.  Bert (I can't remember
his last name) was the most helpful and sent me the answer AFTER I did it
myself.  At any rate, the problem with the printer that printed only the
header page was that I had mistakenly set the output filter to 'xf'.  When
I reset it to the LA75 filter, the printer worked like a charm.  The
"waiting for lock" problem printer was the result of an LA75 filter
process running amok.  I found it with 'lsof' and trashed it and the
printer works fine now.  Ah, now it's time to go on vacation!
