A bit after I sent my summary, I got a reply from Dr. Tommas P. Blinn regarding the
level of support of the S3 Trio graphic adapter WRT Digital Unix. My statement was that this
adapter was not supported under DU, which is a bit too much to say (even tough that's what the
support technician told me).
My problem appeared with an AlphaServer 2100A running Digital Unix V3.2D-2.
Dr. Blinn says :

It seems clear to me that it doesn't work on 3.2D-2 but as Dr. Blinn says, it
might not be the case on other versions of DU. The best thing to do is to check
the SPD to confirm which hardware type will be supported on the version of DU that
you're running.
