console gets stuck in PowerSave mode at boot time

We had a strange problem with our Alpha Station 400 console. At boot
time, when the console is turned on, it switches to PowerSave mode after a
few seconds and stays in that mode forever. The machine was shutdown
properly using the 'shutdown -h' command.

Any suggestions or hints will be highly appreciated!
