lockf problem with DU 3.2C and binmail

I am running DU 3.2C on an alphastation 255/233 that acts as the
mail server for all of our workstations. The workstations are a
mix of justabout every type of Unix. Each one of the workstations
automounts /var/spool/mail from the Alpha.

All of the clients run sendmail 8.6.12 and relay all of their
mail to the alpha. The alpha runs the sendmail provided with
the DU because we need DECnet support.

Periodically on the alpha we will see the following types of messages
in the syslog file:

Aug 27 09:31:39 hwking binmail[13830]: cannot lockf
/usr/spool/mail/"username"

I can fix the problem by renaming the mail file in question, sending t
he user an email message and then catting the old mail file into the new
one.

Has anyone else seen this type of a problem before? Who is causing the
locking
the alpha server or the Unix clients?

Thanks

Jeff Detterman
