I have been trying, without success, to get pppd to read the system
password database for PAP. If DEC merely shipped out a precompiled
ppp2.2 then this is no surprise. The PAP works fine if the password is
in the pap-secrets file but if not, then the login option doesn't work --
it always responds with Password Incorrect.
"Why bother? Just have the ppp spawned from the shell like DEC instructs."
you may ask. Well, the Shiva ppp that ships with M$ Explorer apparently
can't do login scripts & several of my customers don't want to use
something like Trumpet Winsock. Also, why consume the resources of a shell
when all it's going to do is invoke ppp? If I put the secrets, encrypted
or not, into the pap-secrets file, I'm not only trashing the Enhanced
Security, I'm creating a password management nightmare. To create a user
called ppp and have the shell as ppp with the encrypted password in
/etc/passwd not only trashes the Security, I can't tell who's using ppp.
Has anyone found a work-around for using PAP and Enhanced Security with ppp?
