accessing disk without "disklabel"

Are there any way of recovering data from a drive without disklabel
or can I put in the correct disklabel onto a drive without corrupting
the existing data on a disk?

I can't access a disk without disklabel after upgrading to 4.0 (from 3.2b).
What can I do to salvage the data on that disk?
