Changing the hostname

I would like to change the hostname (name only, not IP address) on some of
my servers. Is there any implications to it and what is the proper way of
doing this.

I suspect I can have problems with the /sys/HOSTNAME configuration files.
Can I just rename the directory to the new hostname and still be able
rebuild the kernel with my actual config (but the new hostname) in the future ?
