The saga of the HP LJ4M+ continues. Some people suggested a
patch from DEC, but they said the patch related to printing
out of order, not dropping jobs. My original problem was (and is)
that when jobs are sent back-to-back the second one gets dropped.
DEC claims that the JetDirect card fails to quench input correctly.
HP says no, the lpd is fine and that alphas fail to stop when they
should. Among other things I have installed upgraded firmware on the
printer (a03.16 --> a04.09) and the only difference is that a blank
page is printed instead of the second job. I would like any info on
the following:
(1)Has anyone gotten an HPLJ4M+ to work on a network without at
least occasionally dropping jobs?
(1a)If so, are you using an interface card other than HP's (NCD
apparently makes one).
(2)In the interim I tried using the parallel interface on my 600,
but no luck. Print jobs just wait with the message "waiting for
lp (offline?)". I am using a standard PC interface cable and have
checked that it works on a PC and that the pinouts (according to the
owner's manual for the 600) are the same.
Here is the printcap entry for the parallel interface (generated by
lprsetup under DU 3.2D-1):
lp|lp0:\
:if=/usr/lbin/hplaser4psof:\
:lf=/usr/adm/lperr:\
:lp=/dev/lp0:\
:mx#0:\
:of=/usr/lbin/hplaser4psof:\
:pl#66:\
:pw#80:\
:rw:\
:sd=/usr/spool/lpd:\
:xf=/usr/lbin/xf:
Here is the entry used to print on the network:
lp|lp0|0|miner:\
:af=/usr/adm/lpacct:\
:lf=/usr/adm/lp0err:\
:lp=:\
:mx#0:\
:rm=miner:\
:rp=text:\
:sd=/usr/spool/lpd/lp0:
lp1|1|miner-ps:\
:af=/usr/adm/lpacct:\
:if=/usr/lbin/lj250of:\
:lf=/usr/adm/lp1err:\
:lp=:\
:mx#0:\
:rm=miner:\
:rp=hpstream:\
:sd=/usr/spool/lpd1:
We have been through several iterations of modification on the printcap
for network operation. My thanks to those who have made suggestions so
far, especially regarding the distinction between "text" and "raw".
According to the DEC rep I talked to, I'm far from alone in my quest to
make this go right. Thanks again in advance. -pat_at_krl.caltech.edu
