scu sho dev: Optical versus Direct Access

I have a SONY SMO C501-00 600MB/512-byte optical disk drive, connected
to a 3/400 AXP running DU 3.2. Although I have added entries in
/sys/data/cam_data.c and /etc/disktab for this device, /sbin/scu show
dev reports the device type to be "Direct Access" and not "Optical."
What are the steps to get the device to report itself as "Optical"
and/or is it important that the device does not report itself as
"Optical?"
The thing which concerns me is that we are mostly using 1.2
GB disks now at our site and I cannot label these disks on this
drive/machine combo or create low density (300 MB) filesystems
(yes I know this is a waste of disk space). Its not apparent to me if
this "Optical/Direct Access" is an issue here.

/sbin/scu show device reports:

# /sbin/scu show device target 1 bus 1 lun 0
Inquiry Information:

                      SCSI Bus ID: 1
                   SCSI Target ID: 1
                  SCSI Target LUN: 0
           Peripheral Device Type: Direct Access
             Peripheral Qualifier: Peripheral Device Connected
            Device Type Qualifier: 0
                  Removable Media: Yes
                     ANSI Version: SCSI-1 Compliant
                     ECMA Version: 0
                      ISO Version: 0
             Response Data Format: ANSI SCSI-1
                Additional Length: 31
            Vendor Identification: SONY
           Product Identification: SMO-C501-00
          Firmware Revision Level: 2.13

TIA
