Thanks to dan_at_coastal.EDU for providing the solution to the original
problem. Below is the solution:-

Hello,

In addition to making the changes in /etc/auth/ttys and
/etc/auth/devassign, you also need to run the following to add the
modifications into the system databases:

/usr/tcb/bin/convauth -d tv

I ran into the same problem a few weeks ago. Hope that this helps.

After running the above command, now I am able to get the Digital UNIX 4.0
login screen, but the problem is after logging in, and after waiting for a
few minutes at the "Starting the Common Desktop Environment" window, all I
get is a dtterm window and nothing else. The console window that normally
appears at the bottom of the screen is no where to be seen, and I cannot get
anything else running. If I choose the dxsession option from the login
screen, instead of using CDE, everything appears to be normal. I use the
same Exceed For Windows 3.1 version 5.0 to connect to a HP9000/E55 machine
running HP-UX version 10.01 (which is also using CDE) and everything is
okay.

My question is, is there any other additional setting for Digital UNIX 4.0
using CDE to get it working properly on a PC using Exceed.

Below is my original question:-

Hi,

We are using Exceed For Windows 3.1 version 5.0 for X/Windows emulation from

PC. Previously in Digital UNIX 3.2c (using Enhanced security), to enable a
PC to connect to any Digital servers or workstation using X/Windows
emulation, all we had to do is edit the "ttys" and "devassign" file in
/etc/auth/system to add an entry for the PC that we wish to connect using
X/Windows emulation. Plus edit the "securettys" file in /etc if we wish to
connect as root.
In Digital UNIX 4.0, the same process does not work, we get an error
message, "Cannot obtain database information on this terminal", when trying
to connect to the Digital machine using Exceed on a PC. Furthermore a core
dump file is created in the root directory of the Digital machine we are
trying to connect.

Is there any additional steps in Digital UNIX 4.0 to enable an X/Windows
emulation from PC or is this a bug in Digital UNIX 4.0. Any response will be

much appreciated. Thank you.
