I am running Digital UNIX 3.2C on an Alpha 1000.
Under Sendmail 8.6.9, when DNS could not resolve a host name, then Sendmail
would look in the /etc/hosts file. Sometimes we relied on this "feature"
if we knew there was a problem with DNS. It was a quick workaround to
temporarily put a host in the /etc/hosts file until DNS got straightened
out.
After upgrading Sendmail to 8.7.6, it seems as if Sendmail does not look
at the /etc/hosts file at all. We would like Sendmail to first try to
use DNS to resolve a host name. But if it's unknown to DNS, then we would
like Sendmail to check the /etc/hosts file.
We believe that our /etc/hosts and /etc/svc.conf files are set up correctly
because Telnet, Ping and FTP will all find the host definition ok in the
/etc/host file if DNS is unable to resolve the name.
It's my understanding that Sendmail's method of looking up host names
changed with version 8.7.0. Is there something I can set in the
Sendmail configuration so that Sendmail 8.7.6 will use DNS first and then
check the /etc/hosts file?
