AdvFS for Usenet News spool?

In helping me troubleshoot sluggish throughput, my upstream Usenet News
provider has suggested that using AdvFS may be part of my problem.

        We have 3 2-gig disks and 1 1-gig disk arrayed as a single /var/spool/news
partition containing the entire news spool and the history files. The logs
are in the separate /var partition and news overview is not enabled.

We've acquired a fourth 2-gig disk, which I was planning to swap for the
1-gig so we could enable news overview, but I'm holding off pending
resolution of whether we want to stay with AdvFS.

I've asked the same question in the news.software.nntp newsgroup, and I'll
summarize all responses in both places.
