Splitting Binary Files for Transfer over Internet

Dear Managers,

We often have to ftp large binary files over the internet. As you would
expect the connection often drops during the transfer. One way around
this is to use uuencode and split and send it a piece at a time.

Is there any other alternative? Are there any utilities to split binary file
without using uuecode?
