Direct Access, Big_Endian, FORTRAN

Hi all:

We have a FORTRAN application that needs to access binary files written
on other machines. Using the big_endian flag we were able to read
sequential files without a problem. Direct access files have us
stumped. We need to use a small block size (1 byte) but cannot see how
to specify that. Has anyone any experience dealing with big_endian
direct access files on an alpha?
