Hi Managers,
I am running Ultrix version 4.4 on a DECsystem 5000-240.The system was fine
until last thursday when I rebooted the machice. Now I am getting an error
message on the console saying :
"portmapper is not responding: still".
This error message appears every 1 hour and it is registered as an entry in
the error log file.
After investigation I found out that the error message is generated by
the 'sendmail' command. The sendmail process run at boot time. It is defined in
rc.local file as follow:
/usr/lib/sendmail -bd -q1h -om &
When I checked the processes running on the system, I noticed that the system
run a process every time it generates the message. the process
looks like the following :
user pid %cpu %mem SZ RSS TT STAT TIME COMMAND
root 126 0.0 0.8 824 428 ? S 0:00 -running queue:/usr/spool/mqueue
(sendmail)
The Ultrix machine is defined as an NFS client to a SCO NFS servers. The
NFS is working fine without any problem.
The portmap process is running.I checked NFS using rpcinfo command and I found
that NFS is fine.
I tried to initialize the aliases using the command "/usr/lib/sendmail -bi"
but the process hanged.
I tried to display the queue information using the command "/usr/lib/sendmail
-bp" but the process hanged.
I stopped all other applications on the system but the problem remained
Keep in mind that the Ultrix system is acting as NFS client.
Is it a problem related to the sendmail database ?
Is it related to something else ?
Why when I use the sendmail the process hangs ?
I appreciate your reply in advance.
