Mtools problem

Hi I'm Trying to use the floppy disk in one DEC alpha 3000

  I'm able to tar in a floppy disk using tar and /dev/fd0c as the device

    However I have problems using the mtools, (I'm using Mtools version
3.0,
dated 12 May 96).

      This is what I am doing:

>mformat a:
>> mformat: Drive 'A:' not supported

      I tried different combination and still doesn't work.
      another example is:

> mdir
>> Drive 'A:' not supported
>> Cannot initialize 'A:'

 perhaps I don't know how to tell mtools which is the device to use
(/dev/fd0c)
