vdump and vrestore

I don't seem to be able to vrestore my files after vdumping them. Here's
the procedure I use:

    rsh hostname /sbin/vdump -0 -Cu -f - / | dd of=/dev/nrmt0h bs=32k

When I try to "vrestore" it, I get:
    # dd bs=32k if=/dev/nrmt0h|vrestore -if -
vrestore: Date of the vdump save-set: Thu Oct 17 15:08:25 1996
    vrestore: empty save-set
    vrestore: nothing will be restored
Which I don't expect.

If I try using just "restore", i get:
    # dd bs=32k if=/dev/nrmt0h|restore -if -
Tape is not a dump tape
Which I do expected.

Anyone have any ideas what is going wrong? I'm running Dec Unix 3.2d-1.
