Hi all,

I posted this question some time ago, I would of summised earlier but was sick:

Thanks to the following for responses:

John Kohl <jtk_at_atria.com>
David Bremner <bremner_at_cs.mcgill.ca>
Tom Webster <webster_at_europa.mdc.com>

John Kohl came up with a solution, given below:

>Yep, this is a known X server bug. I've reported it to DEC.
>
>In the meantime, to get rid of this "melting" effect, add the "-su -bs"
>flags to the X server startup line in /usr/dt/config/Xservers.con file:
>Here's what I have in that file:
> :0 Local local_at_console /usr/bin/X11/X -su -bs :0

I have also got response from DEC who read this list as well and there solution
is similar:

>Roberto Romani <romani_at_redbck.stl.dec.com>
>
>I think the problem is with backing store or save under problem with Xserver,
>I assume you are running Open 3d v4.0 as well .try modifying the Xserver config
>file i.e. /usr/dt/config/Xserver
>
>:0 Local local_at_console /usr/bin/X11/X -terminate -su -bs -I -ffbdoDMA 0 :0
>
> -su disables save under
> -bs disables backing store
> -ffbdoDMA is to modify behaviour of DMA

Here is some observations I have seen with this problem as well:

With out fix:
-------------

Log in as ROOT. Move icons around background gets corrupted.
Log in as different user. Moving icons around DOES NOT corrupt background.

Log in as ROOT or different user, popping up menus corrupts background image.

With the fix:
-------------
None of the above occurs.

Thanks for all the help
