Shutting down Oracle from across the net...

Hello all,

I have a Digital Unix system running Oracle. I have another Digital
Unix system that is running the amanda network backup software. Since our
database consultant tells me that doing a backup of a running database is
an exercise in futility, I'd like to find a way to have the amanda software
shutdown the database before backups start, and restart the database when
the backups are done.

Amanda is run from cron as user bin, so ideally I'd like to do
something like:

dbshut; amanda-dump; dbstart

(Not the exact commands, but you get the idea)

So I need a method for user bin on system A to run a script on system B as
user oracle. Need I say that the method should be somewhat secure? :-)

Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated!
