Well Digital and I solved the problem
It seems that when I had installed (built and installed) gcc-2.7.2
which is the only change since yesterday, it had changed the permissions
of the usr/bin directory to drwsr-x--- which made all shells unusable.
That was something I did not check In I dentifying the problem, so don't
be a sucker like me and assume that a make install will not wreck
anything.
