This morning I came in and found my workstation (Alpha 255/233 DU 3.2) which I
left in the Session Manager Pause was very slow to authenticate my password.
As soon as I got in, I found a message "swap space less than 10 percent free".
The system was extremely slow, so I did a shutdown without a detailed
analysis. However it seemed that there were lots of "sendmail" and "slocal"
processes.
In fact after I logged in after the reboot, I found in the mail log a lot of
messages indicating that quite a number of mails have been queuing for a
long time.
Nov 12 09:19:19 ... to="| /usr/lib/mh/slocal ...", delay=12:35:11, stat=Sent
...
Nov 12 09:19:31 ... to="| /usr/lib/mh/slocal ...", delay=00:10:34, stat=Sent
According to a message circulated a while ago on this list, I set up using
slocal to filter out unwanted advertisting mail, just setting up a .forward
file with a single line "| /usr/lib/mh/slocal -user lucio", and a simple
.maildelivery file
source unwanted.com | R /poseidon/lucio/bin/logdestroy
source unwanted.com destroy A -
default - > ? /var/spool/mail/lucio
I am not using any mh feature, I use Pine as my mail agent.
Is the possibility of several hung slocal-sendmail processes a known feature
of slocal ?
What do people think about slocal (recommend, discourage ...) ?
Anything wrong in my configuration ?
Could the trouble be due to the fact that yesterday ALL machines in our domain
changed subnet number (from x.y.2.z to x.y.16.z) ?
In the meanwhile I've disable the .forward file.
Any suggestion appreciated.
