tcp errors

Maybe someone can shed some light on this problem.

We have an Alpha 1000 using Unix3.2D-1 (Rev41). with multiple USR total
control and cisco 5200's as
terminal servers. All of our term servers handle ppp. Our Alpha also
handles the routing to the external
network using DEC tulip based Ethernet cards.

Our problem is as follows:

We seem to get a lot of "unacceptable segment" errors in the TCP layer
and an occasional damaged packet.
I suspect that the errors are responsable for the much dreaded DNS host
lookup failures that our users
seem to be getting (lame delegations)(Another offshoot of this is
disconnects with cheaper modems).

Performance does not seem to be a problem however the disconnects are
causing user problems. I've noticed a
3.2c patch for the tulip based Dec ether card. Is this still a problem
for 3.2d.

Any diagnostic suggestions would be appreciated.
