Hello,
This topic has probably been answered many many times, but I'm stuck.
I'm trying to figure out how to set up a SLIP connection between my home
(win95) and my alpha server. The networkning guide is rather "vague" on
this subject, ora assume that you are a network guru. I checked other admin
books but did not find any useful information. I would like to connect from
my home to my server to do some work. I am NO TCP/IP networking expert, I
know a little, that's it.
My machine's IP adress is 142.1.2.3, I have a 14400 hayes compatible modem
(GVC 14400). Our netmask is 255.255.0.0, we have a router at 142.3.x.y that
is acting as a gateway to a remote office. Here is what I did for now:
1) I used 'netsetup' and configured the sl0 interface. When asked for the
IP adress of the interface, I answered 142.1.2.154. For the remote host IP
address, I entered 142.1.2.255 (I think it is no good, so SUPPOSE I entered
142.1.2.153 instead)
2) I then specified a baud rate of 19200 for the modem because 14400 was
invalid. I guess it's the speed between the modem and the CPU that netsetup
was asking, so I bumped it up.
3) I did not specify any other supplemental slattach parameters. (What are
the defaults ? Does it filter ICMP packets by default ? Does it select IP
header compression, auto compression mode or NO compression ?)
4) I restarted the network and tested the config from home with Windows 95
Dialup networking, specifying a SLIP connection. I have a couple of
questions there:
a) What IP address should I tell Windows to use ? Is it 142.1.2.153 or
142.1.2.254 ? I did NOT specify "server assigned address", instead I
specified "142.1.2.254"
b) I don't have a DNS on my server, the nearest thing I have is my
/etc/hosts files. The only options for the DNS in win95 are "server
assigned name server address" and "specify name server address" (I have NO
DNS address, how should I configure this option ?
c) I unchecked the "use default gateway" and "IP Header compression"
options in Win 95.
d) I did not check the box labeled "connect to network"
When windows 95 asked me to connect, I specified my Unix username and my
password.
I then Hit the "connect button" and a terminal window appeared, I cleared
it and Windows told me that I connected at 9600 bauds (instead of 14400 as
I expected)
Nothing happened after that. I tried to "telnet" to 142.1.2.3 (The server
to which the sl0 is attached) and it would not connect. The only thing I
could ping was "142.1.2.154".
I am desperate. I had the modem work in a "standard" dialup modem config,
but I need TCP/IP and a FASTER connection than 9600bps to my host to do
more "serious" work (Like client/server computing from home with oracle
client software).
Can someone help me configuring that SLIP thing, and also tell me how I can
set up my modem ? For example, how can I send commands to my modem to
configure it properly ? Does 'tip' work under digital UNIX. Do I have to
download it from the 'net ?
If anyone has a "how to", please help.
Thanks a LOT.
