Thanks for the many responses, too numerous to list everyone.

Q: My original question was, "How do I force a crash dump for
a machine that is completely hung up ?".

A: Do whatever it takes to get to the chevron (">>>") prompt.
This varies from one model of alpha to the next, the most common
method being hit the halt button. Once at the >>> prompt,
type "crash". Reboot the system and it will create a crash dump
file just as if the machine had actually crashed on its' own.
