Summary - Backing up

As I expected, I had forgotten the obvious...

Both tar and dump have a - option which forces the output to standard
out. From there it can be piped through compress or gzip to get the
needed compression.

One person also suggested Amanda, which I have downloaded but not yet
looked at since the tar piped through gzip is enough for the moment.
