basically the answer is it can't be done through cron.
Suggestions were to look at

"expect"
Networker - already did, not a solution for us.
"amanda"
    and
GeNUBackup

I'm also looking at SM-arch which I looked up through the
archives.

original question follows

Hi,

Question on rdump or dump using cron...

Is it possible to use rdump in a crontab entry if the backup goes
to a second tape? Will the dump just fail because it needs a second
tape or is there a way to reply to the request for a second tape?

If it is possible, could someone please send an example of a script
of a rdump/dump command used with cron where it notifies the operator
that a second tape is needed and the operator is able to respond to
it.

will summarize.

thanks,
Allan
