Cxx causing huge load increases...

I've got a problem with the cxx compiler on an Alpha 1000 running DU 3.2c.
Every time a compile starts up, it uses up to 60 meg of core and slows our
login server horrifically. I'm still one of those throwbacks who use
un-object oriented C, and I'm not familiar with the behavior of this
compiler. Any ideas on fixes, patches, prayers would be welcome. Thanks.
