This summary is very overdue. I originally posted my problem in July.
My problem was that at the >>> prompt, the scroll lock key was causing
my system to reboot, or to spit out a strange error. Also, "more"
stopped working at the >>> prompt. Other than that, my machine was
working fine, and that is why I haven't gotten around to looking at the
problem more closely until now. All this happened after I trashed
a disk and a Digital Hardware support guy updated my firmware. Thanks
to Tom Blinn and Dave Golden for their replies.
Dave informed me that DEC stopped supporting "more" in the firmware at
some point (probably to save space) and suggested I use ^s and ^q, which
worked fine. As for my scroll lock problem, Tom suggested I try another
keyboard and then I try reloading my firmware. I tried the new keyboard
and the problem didn't go away. I reloaded the original rev of firmware
that came with my system and that solved the scroll lock problem. My
original system came loaded with firmware V5.0 or V5.1 and the DEC
hardware support guy had loaded V6.1 I think. Apparently my firmware
had gotten trashed or the later rev of firmware was not completely
compatible with my hardware.
Thanks again,
Mike
